Frequently asked questions

Will enlarging an image improve it?

No. Upscaling invents pixels by interpolating between the ones already there, which softens edges and cannot recover detail that was never captured. Always start from the largest original you have — and if you only have a small version, a smaller final size will look better than a stretched large one.

Does resizing lose quality?

Downscaling loses detail by definition, because there are fewer pixels to hold it, but done well it looks sharp — this uses the browser's high-quality smoothing rather than dropping pixels. What costs more quality is the format: exporting a photo as JPG re-compresses it, so if you plan to edit further, export PNG.

What size should a social media image be?

The presets cover the common ones: 1080 × 1080 for an Instagram square, 1080 × 1350 portrait, 1080 × 1920 for a story, 1600 × 900 for X, 1584 × 396 for a LinkedIn banner, 1280 × 720 for a YouTube thumbnail and 1200 × 630 for an Open Graph image. Platforms change these occasionally, so check if the result looks cropped.

How do I hit a specific file size rather than dimensions?

Use the Resize Image to KB tool instead. It works the other way round — you give it a kilobyte limit and it searches for the quality that fits, which is what upload forms actually ask for.

Why has my image lost its transparency?

Because JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled — with white here. Export as PNG or WEBP to keep a transparent background.
